Interview with Donna Lattanzio, Author of An Accident Waiting to Happen

31 May 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write An Accident Waiting to Happen?

A very long time ago, I heard a conversation about an air traffic controller who had inadvertently caused a plane to crash. How the person never fully recovered from the reality of what they had done; how their life was altered forever. I thought, how horrible it must have been for the air traffic controller and it was this unfortunate event which created the book’s main character; her need to change her identity, to flee, and to create a new life for herself.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of An Accident Waiting to Happen, what would they be?

These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My go-to genres are psychological thrillers and historical fiction; genres at opposite ends of the reading spectrum! However, writing psychological thrillers is my favorite. I find it immensely satisfying to explore a character’s psychological quirks.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Maiden by Alex Michaelides, Paper Bullets by Jeffrey H. Jackson, and Carnegies Maid by Marie Benedict.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The ending for sure! It was not the first draft’s original ending because it was too neat and tidy and life is never neat and tidy.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Having the TV on as background noise works for me. Usually I have it tuned to an inane channel like horse racing. I tried having music on as background noise, but I wound up singing along which was a huge distraction.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Be kind to everyone you meet. Do good deeds. Love your family, respect your friends and always, always be true to yourself.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

There are times in life when factors are not as they appear. Many of us have made mistakes, both big and small. Sometimes they happen with minor consequence, sometimes with devastating repercussions. The reality is, we are all human and we are all fragile.
