Interview with David Rosenfelt, Author of Blackout

08 Mar 2016
Tell us a little bit about your new release, Blackout.

It’s a standalone thriller about a cop who is shot while on duty. He sustains a head injury which causes retrograde amnesia, wiping out the last decade of memory. It soon becomes obvious that he had been in the process of uncovering a major terrorist plot, but with no memory, he is forced to desperately try to recreate his actions and learn the truth.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

Stretching the word ‘literary’, I would invite all the comedy writers from the old Sid Caesar television shows. They include, among others, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Neil Simon and Larry Gelbart. I wouldn’t ask them a single question…I’d just sit back and listen to them talk.

What will your next adventure be?

If you mean what am I writing, I’m working on two Andy Carpenter books for 2016. The first is called “Outfoxed”, and will be released in July. The second is called “12 Dogs of Christmas”…you probably can guess when that will be released. If you mean real-life adventure, I’m settling in to watch the NFL playoffs.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Enjoy the moment.

Where is your happy place? Why does it bring you joy?

Maine. We moved here four years ago from California, and it’s as if we found Brigadoon. It’s physically beautiful; we live on wooded acreage on a lake, and it’s like waking up every morning in a Folger’s commercial. But the people make this place special; we have made lifelong friends that I only wish I knew for my whole life.

What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book a second time.

What’s your favorite quote or scene from Blackout?

The main character, Doug Brock, is on his computer, googling to attempt to refresh his memory and learn what has gone on in the world the last ten years. He says:

“There is no doubt the Kardashian family is everywhere, but I can’t seem to get Google to tell me why. They’re famous, but it doesn’t appear to have come from acting or singing or anything like that. I think their father was OJ Simpson’s lawyer at one point, but I doubt that explains it. Nobody seems to be broadcasting “Keeping up with the Dershowitzes”.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I don’t, which is just as well, since I probably wouldn’t live by it.
