Interview with Christopher Cartwright, author of The Aleutian Portal

25 Oct 2017

What can you tell us about your new release, The Aleutian Portal?

Science tells us that the Navajo First People who occupied what is now known as the Four Corners in the United States share very similar DNA to those in both Alaskan Yupik and Siberian First People. Likewise, all three groups of First Peoples share similar mythology within their differing belief systems.

History tries to explain this by referring us back to the last ice-age roughly 13,000 years ago, when the Bering Strait was still a landmass.

The Aleutian Portal, looks at a very different possible explanation.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My mother, who was writing science fiction in the eighties and introduced me to the world of Orson Scott Card, Isaac Asimov and H.G. Wells.

What fictional literary world would you most like to visit?

he ship of a NUMA vessel in the original series of books by Clive Cussler… Nah, who am I kidding? It would be Hogwarts for sure!

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

I can travel to any time or place and live out any story I can imagine. I like to see the world from my character’s points of view, where even some of the worst villains of history often start out with good intentions. Unlike writing a film script, I’m not restrained by production costs. My action scenes could might cost millions to produce in a film, but are free to imagine.

BAM. You’re a superhero. What’s your superpower?

The ability to fly – because let’s face it, if you could fly like a bird, what else would you possibly want to do?

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Living vicariously in the world great adventure where anything was possible, either by reading a good book or writing it.

What scene in The Aleutian Portal was your favorite to write?

There’s a scene with a lot of bad guys on motorcycles. I won’t go into it, but let’s just say when someone makes the mistake of picking a fight with Genevieve, it’s unlikely to turn out very well for them. She grew up in a dangerous part of Russia, in a world where you don’t get to grow up unless you can fight.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

It is better to be alone, than in bad company – George Washington
