Interview with C. B. Lyall, Author of The Vassal of Magic

07 Jun 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Vassal of Magic – Book 3?

I’ve always loved reading fantasy stories, I lived in Hong Kong, and I have three sons. It seemed natural to combine that moment of my life into a magical story about a teenage boy.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read and write is fantasy, although not always Young Adult. I do love stories with strong female characters, and the series I’m now writing, “No Place for Decent Women”, will be for an adult audience. I also like to read historical fiction.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict, I Must Betray You by Rita Sepetys, The Age of Witches: A Novel by Louisa Morgan, and Flame and Crystal Thorns by Kay L Moody.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

When Myra shows Malik that she is no longer under his control. She waits until it will have the maximum impact on him. It has a very catlike feel of taunting prey, and it’s especially gratifying because she has always seemed the victim of circumstance until this moment.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have a large, bone china tea mug that I use, but I’m not superstitious about it.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I like to seize opportunities that are offered to me. I think of life as an adventure to be experienced, it’s not a spectator sport.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Trust is hard to win and easy to lose. Not only in relationships with friends and family, but also within our societies. Leaders have the potential to ruin or advance our world.
