Interview with Alta Hensley, Author of Sinners & Gin

What can you tell us about your new release, Sinners & Gin?

This is book six in my Top Shelf Series. All the books can be read as a standalone but take place in the dark, wicked world of Spiked Roses in New Orleans.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

My Nana always told me I should be an author when I was growing up. I liked to write stories and make books since I could. She was always my biggest cheerleader on following the dream.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

That’s a tough question. I don’t think I have a top 5 on books, but I am addicted to books that are considered dark romance. I buy and read those as fast as I can. I don’t really have a favorite book, but dark romance is my favorite genre. I love books that are psychological, thrillers, suspenseful and twisted.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would do a panel rather than just one guest. And I would do a panel of Indie romance authors. I feel that there are several who are true geniuses and have mastered the hustle. They know the business so well, and I find that absolutely fascinating. I would ask them what is next? Because if anyone has their finger on the pulse, it is the indie romance author community.

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Seeing the final product. It’s so hard to get there, but when I type the words THE END, it makes the challenges all worth it.

What is a typical day like for you?

I get up every single day at 6am and begin working. I’m a morning person, so I get my best work done before noon. Quitting time for me is 5pm. I keep a pretty strict schedule if I can. I’m also a binge writer. I don’t write every day. Some days are just for administrative work, or marketing, or research. Then I have my writing days where all I do is write for hours and hours.

What scene in Sinners & Gin was your favorite to write?

The ending. I can’t give it away, but it ended just the way I wanted it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I try to be a positive person. I try not to allow negativity to enter my life if I can avoid it. I am a cup half full type of person. I always try to see the good and the silver lining in everything.
