Interview with Alessa Thorn, Author of Set

20 Jul 2021

What can you tell us about your new release, Set?

Set is the god of war from Egyptian Mythology, and the story is about how in modern times he’s living in Egypt and working as a mercenary. He’s given a job to protect a mob boss’s daughter, Ayla, who has no idea who her real father is. Before Set was known as a god of war, he was actually a god of protection, and helping Ayla reminds him of those beginnings, and helps draw him back into living again.

What books are currently on your nightstand?

At the moment I have some Egyptian mythology books, as I have another two books in the series and I love reading them before bed. I also have ‘A Dark Vampire Curse’ by Nikki St Crowe and ‘Anyway the Wind Blows’ by Rainbow Rowell.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

I’m really obsessed with mythology and ancient history. I love learning about gods and different cultures from around the world. I get a lot of joy out of it because there’s always something new to learn about and its keeps my ADHD amused for hours.

If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?

Soaking in my bathtub! It’s my favorite way to end the day.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

Believe nothing that you hear, and only half of what you see.

What scene from Set was your favorite to write?

I really loved writing the scenes in the Duat, the Egyptian underworld, and Set’s interactions with Thoth, the god of magic. They both have such big personalities and have such a long history together that throwing them together again was a lot of fun.
